about

Vive ( pronounced “veev”) is a French interjection which means “live” or “long life.” Most English speakers will know it as part of the phrase “Vive la France” or—more relevant to this track—“Vive la résistance,” a rallying cry against the occupation of France during WWII.

For decades there has been an epidemic of police violence against black people. This is not news. We've all seen too many videos of police committing murder. We've seen too many of those officers face no repercussions of substance—at least none sufficient to dissuade the next act of violence. As a title, Vive is an affirmation. It's an imperative. It's a vision for a future. Live, live, live.

We say their names. George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Tony McDade. Dominique Fells. Trayvon Martin. Sandra Bland. Freddie Gray. Eric Garner. Aiyana Stanley-Jones. Michael Brown. David McAtee. Tamir Rice. Philando Castle. Stephon Clark. There are countless others whose names we do not say; whose names we do not know.

Repeating names, though, is not enough.

All proceeds from this track will be donated to bail funds for BLM protesters, memorial funds for the black and queer victims of police violence, and charities/organizations dedicated to helping black people (especially black trans women, perhaps the most at-risk group in America and one that tends to be underrepresented in important conversations) continue to exist and thrive. Updates on amount raised and exactly which organizations/funds will receive the money from any given period will be available on Twitter.

Black lives matter.
Black queer lives matter.
Black trans lives matter.
Black womens' lives matter.
Black disabled lives matter.
Black. Lives. Matter.
